Digital Agencies
In 2009, a recently minted college grad, I took interest in the digital marketing potential of a budding video sharing platform called YouTube, and how it could help transform the nature of paid media. I co-founded a digital agency with a friend of mine and got to work pitching any company who would listen on how harnessing the power of a user-generated video platform could yield better ROI when compared to traditional paid media channels.
I found an early receptive audience in Pixar, convincing them and their parent company Disney, to relax their notoriously strict copyright laws around Intellectual property and instead embrace user-generated remix culture. I inked a limited deal to produce a series of exploratory paid media campaigns for them, and they were a resounding success, increasing their DVD sales for all films we promoted. From there, it was off to the races.
